Carmen Castro, age 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family.
She was the beloved wife of the late Salvador Castro and a proud mother to Ricardo, Mario, Salvador, Carlos (Anna), and Jon (Hortencia). She was also stepmother to Salvador (deceased), Mary Esther, and Guadalupe (deceased). Her family tree grew strong and wide, blessing her with 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and even one great-great-grandchild.
Born to Andres Torres and Rosario Cuevas, both deceased, she grew up with her brother, Alfred Torres, and her late sister, Maria “Mary” Villanueva.
She made her home in Cicero for 43 years, and her life reflected the steady work ethic of her generation. From her first job at the Kellogg’s factory to her final years working at the Willington factory, she carried pride in her work and joy in her independence—owning not one but two homes.
But her life was never just about work. She loved the little and big adventures that filled her days: playing bingo at her senior center, traveling both near and far, shopping trips and casino visits with friends, and savoring every bite of good food. She delighted in exploring Chicago, took joy in her international travels, and always made time for movies and laughter. Her sense of humor and her love for a good joke stayed with her to the end.
Above all, she treasured family. Holidays and gatherings were filled with her warmth, stories, and the laughter she so easily inspired. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, generosity, and joy that will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and beyond.
Her family and friends will remember her not only for the long and full life she lived, but for the way she filled it—with flavor, with adventure, with laughter, and with love.
